Lanca son of Uffa was born in AD 595, in a valley, in what we now call the Yorkshire Dales, and was born a slave. It is a time when Britain is in chaos. New Saxon kingdoms are in conflict with old British kingdoms, and each of them in danger of conflict with others of their own kind. Out of the chaos the lands we know as England and Wales are being created.
But Lanca, descended from the Germanic regiments brought to Britain as part of the Roman army more than two hundred and fifty years earlier, and great great grandson of an officer in the army of King Arthur, a follower of the great Lancelot, is a slave. His master is Wulfrum, a brutal Saxon thegn who conquered the valley shortly before Lanca was born. As a fifteen year old he is sold in the slave market at York, and taken over the Pennines to work in what he knows must be that dreaded place the Christians call Hell.
Four years later Lanca is a tall and powerful man, whose body has been developed by the hard manual work. He does not know it, but his meeting with Lavinia, the beautiful young wife of the owner of his owner, will set in motion a train of events which will lead towards his freedom and, he hopes, the ultimate freedom of his family. Along the way he will encounter love and hatred, triumph and disaster, war and massacre.
